Keynote | Navigation Resilience for Autonomous Drones
- High Tech

- Research & Development
This year’s keynote on navigation resilience for autonomous drones will be held by Prof. Stephan Weiss, a leading researcher at the University Klagenfurt, together with Michael Gruber, CEO of avemoy, which is a successful spin-off from the university. We are proud to showcase one of Carinthia’s most outstanding landmarks: the dronehub, which is a research centre for unmanned aviation systems on the University of Klagenfurt campus. The dronehub has launched an impressive expansion of its testing infrastructure with the construction of the Outdoor Drone System Arena, which is considered the largest facility of its kind worldwide. Researchers will soon have a unique venue to develop and test innovative drone technologies under real-world conditions. The drone arena, an impressive structure with an area of over 1,000 square meters and tall steel columns, is about to be completed and complements Europe’s largest Indoor Drone Hall, which already exists on the university campus.

Researchers at the University of Klagenfurt have been working on new technologies aimed at optimising the use of drones since 2008. The focus lies on developing autonomous multi-drone systems that allow several drones to navigate on their own, coordinate independently, and exchange data. Ultimately, the goal is for swarms of drones to perform tasks – much like a flock of birds in nature – without relying on central programming. One particularly challenging aspect in this context is the camera-based navigation, which allows drones to form a picture of their surroundings so they can navigate around areas without needing GNNS.
