How can we bring the proven success of autonomous logistics to one of the most safety-critical environments—airports?
Project AVIATOR takes on this challenge by virtually adapting and validating an automation solution for airport-ground operations.
At the heart of the project lies a high-fidelity digital twin of Klagenfurt Airport, enabling AI-driven fleet coordination, sensor simulation, safety evaluation, and vehicle decision-making within a risk-free, highly realistic test environment. This virtual-first approach accelerates development, reduces costs, and ensures regulatory alignment—without deploying a single real vehicle.
AVIATOR demonstrates how scalable automation can boost efficiency, safety, and sustainability in airport logistics, delivering measurable gains in operational performance, emissions reduction, and turnaround reliability. It unlocks new business potential for stakeholders such as airport operators, airlines, and ground handlers.
Strategically, the project positions Austria as a hub for airport automation, paving the way for ground-breaking innovation, creating high-skilled jobs and export opportunities. Klagenfurt Airport becomes a unique innovation testbed that bridges digital validation and real-world application.
AVIATOR is more than technology transfer—it is a catalyst for green, intelligent, and future-ready airport mobility aligned with the EU Green Deal, Aviation 2040+, and Austria’s Mobility Masterplan 2030.
